Queen Victoria & The Scottish Highlands

I can’t wait to focus on Queen Victoria, her watercolors, and her love for the Scottish Highlands inside the Nature Creative during the month of February. We’ll explore the landscape of northern Scotland, talk about the time Queen Victoria spent there, look at some specific topics like fishing in the River Dee, the importance of tartan and the influence of Sir Walter Scott, and of course enjoy tea time with historic recipes.

As always, we’ll be connecting our Queen Victoria studies to our own lives and landscapes. What similarities and differences do we find between the Scottish Highlands and our own surroundings? How does our nature journaling practice compare with Queen Victoria’s habit of recording her surroundings with art and words?

A preliminary booklist is available to current members of The Nature Creative and will be released again on the first day of class (February 3, 2023).

Suggested supplies include: watercolors (I’ll be using ultramarine, burnt sienna, sap green, cerulean, a yellow similar to Hansa yellow, and quinacridone red rose deep), a medium water brush, watercolor paper or a Stillman & Bern Beta sketchbook size 7.5x7.5 inches, a black gel pen, white gel pen, pencil & eraser, sharpie, permanent pen like a micron.
